Cardboard Pets Popular Among Students During Covid-19 Lockdown In China

Locked up and not allowed out of their dormitories during the Covid-19 outbreak in China, many Chinese students turned to designing cardboard pets to relieve loneliness and boredom.

To reduce the stress of this lockdown, many young students across China began creating cardboard pets from recycled cardboard and attracted many young people to do the same.

Most of the cardboard pets designed are usually cute dogs and placed by students in front of their dorm rooms. The cardboard pets are also taken for a walk or for lunch, and some of them bringing it when to undergo a PCR test to check for Covid-19. Besides "dogs", many other students also make cats or rabbits pets, then share them online.

Many people think that this is a new trend that can reduce mental breakdown after 3 years of China being affected by Covid-19. In addition, raising "pets" with cardboard also makes students not too worried about them about living or accommodation conditions.

“I see a lot of people online doing this and many of my classmates are also doing this. Personally, I also need a dog to comfort myself when I have to live alone on campus," said Gong, from Northwest University in Xi'an city.

"A cardboard dog won't grow old or get sick. It doesn't need to be disinfected or undergo any rigorous medical checks, even if their owners are isolated.” said Gong.

However, the craze for "pets" in cardboard also received a lot of criticism from netizens when some of them thought that these students would lose control of their minds if the restrictions lasted longer. “So cute, but also sad,” one netizen wrote on Twitter.

Although most parts of the world have reopened their borders and the COVID restrictions have been lifted, but in China the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown in some areas is still common in China.
