Carolina Shiino, 26, crowning as Miss Japan in 2024 wasn't a moment of unmitigated joy. While her radiant smile and undeniable beauty captivated the audience, beneath the glitter and confetti swirled a storm of controversy. The crux of the matter? Shiino's Ukrainian heritage.

Born in Ukraine to Ukrainian parents, Shiino moved to Japan at the tender age of five when her mother remarried a Japanese man. She grew up navigating the complexities of biculturalism, embracing both her Ukrainian roots and immersing herself in Japanese life. Yet, when she took the coveted Miss Japan title, a vocal segment of the public questioned her very right to represent the nation.

Critics, often cloaked in the anonymity of online forums, argued that Shiino couldn't embody the essence of Japaneseness due to her non-Japanese blood. They cited her facial features, her accent, and even her perceived lack of understanding of traditional Japanese customs as disqualifying factors.

Netizen write on X (formerly Twitter) that the competition was 'discriminating against Japanese faces'. Another said in a post: 'This person who was chosen as Miss Japan is not even a mix with Japanese but 100% pure Ukrainian. Understand she is beautiful, but this is 'Miss Japan'. Where is the Japaneseness?

However, Shiino's story defies such rigid notions of identity. Arriving in Japan at a young age, she diligently studied the language, excelled in academics, and actively participated in cultural activities. She even competed in traditional tea ceremonies, showcasing her dedication to understanding and appreciating Japanese customs.

The controversy surrounding Shiino's crowning may not fade away entirely. But amidst the negativity, there's a growing chorus of voices celebrating her achievement.

Miss Japan relinquishes crown following affair

Karolina Shiino, the first foreign-born winner of Miss Japan, has resigned her title amidst controversy surrounding an alleged extramarital affair. This unprecedented decision follows a magazine Shukan Bunshun report claiming Shiino, 26, was dating a married doctor.

Initially, the pageant organizers refuted the allegation, stating the man had claimed to be single and Shiino was unaware of his marital status. However, further investigation revealed she knew about his marriage but initially lied about it. Facing mounting pressure and accusations of dishonesty, Shiino offered to step down, which the association accepted.

This marks the first time in history that a Miss Japan winner has relinquished their title, leaving the position vacant for the remainder of the year. The incident has sparked discussions about public figures, ethical conduct, and the challenges of navigating personal relationships in the spotlight.
